How Nashua Rotary Transformed Membership

The Rotary Club of Nashua has demonstrated that sustainable membership growth doesn't happen by accident—it happens by design.

In early 2023, the club completed a strategic plan centered on growth, engagement, and long-term sustainability. A guiding principle of that plan was to view members as the club's most important asset and to thoughtfully manage the entire membership journey—from a prospective member's first introduction to Rotary through years of active service.

The club divided that journey into two phases:

-Recruiting and Onboarding during the first year.

-Long-Term Member Engagement for the remainder of a member's Rotary experience.

The foundation of Nashua's success has been a structured Recruiting and Onboarding process designed not simply to increase membership, but to attract members who will become active, engaged, and committed Rotarians.

Their approach focuses on four key areas:

Target the right members.
Rather than casting a wide net, Nashua identified the professions, skills, and community leaders that would strengthen the club. They established clear membership criteria and updated their website with expectations for prospective members and an online interest form.

Recruit proactively.
Instead of waiting for inquiries, experienced Rotarians actively reach out to prospective members, introduce them to Rotary, answer questions, and determine whether there is a mutual fit before moving forward.

Follow a consistent selection process.
Prospective members meet with members of the recruiting team for an in-depth conversation about Rotary, club expectations, and opportunities for service. Candidates are then thoughtfully evaluated before membership is offered.

Invest in onboarding.
Each new member is paired with two experienced sponsors who serve as mentors during the first year. Sponsors help new members build relationships, become involved in committees and service projects, attend meetings, and learn about Rotary through formal orientation sessions. New members are encouraged to meet specific participation goals before completing their onboarding year.

The club has learned that success comes from having a clear vision, developing consistent processes, and following them with intention. By emphasizing engagement from day one, Nashua has built a stronger membership pipeline and a more sustainable club.

The results speak for themselves. Since January 1, 2026, the Rotary Club of Nashua has welcomed 13 new members—an impressive example of how thoughtful planning and intentional member engagement can fuel long-term growth.
